Parent Partnership Program

Navigating the financial aid process can be scary, especially if you are the parent of a first-time college student. Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Office of Financial aid (OFA) has developed the Parent Partnership Program (P3) to operate as an all-in-one resource tool for parents and families. Parents play a role at ever step in the student process, from planning for your student’s education to maximizing your students education as it relates to financial aid.  We have developed helpful courses that will take our parents through each step of the process. You will be quizzed but this will only help you have a better understanding of your student’s financial aid and the tedious process.

To begin the courses, click on course link, then Register. Enter your email address, not the students.  The Student ID you will use is “123456789”. Once you have registered the course information will be listed for completion.  You will be able to pause and resume sessions. Take notes as you go along so you will know what questions to ask the Office of Financial Aid.

Planning for Your Student’s Education

Parent  Course – Financial Aid Orientation 

This course offers critical information about how to pay for college and how to apply for financial aid. Many students receive some version of financial aid to assist them with the college expenses. Learn about how to prepare for paying for college. This session will improve your financial aid knowledge and help ensure future success.

Funding Your Student’s Education

Parent Course – Covering College Cost

This course includes important information about the types of aid a student can apply for. The thought of pay for college can be overwhelming, however this course will go over all the types of aid that is available to your student. Learning about the types of financial aid your student may be awarded will assist you in helping your student in utilizing their financial aid to its fullest extent. Understanding the policies of financial aid will help you help your student maintain their financial aid eligibility in the future.

Engaging in Your Student’s Education

Parent Course – Academic Performance

This course demonstrates the importance of academic performance and how it impacts a student’s financial aid. Being awarded aid is only the beginning. There are still several requirements to maintain eligibility for financial aid. The selection of course, withdrawing from courses and even failing courses all could cause a disruption with a student’s financial aid. After this course you will know how to assist your students through this process.

Maximizing Your Student’s Education

Parent Course – Parent Financial Literacy

This course gives parents critical details on what happens after graduation as it relates to financial aid.

Below we have listed some tips and information to assist you with helping your student utilize his or her financial aid at FVSU.

Helpful Tips:

• The responsibility of paying for college is the student’s and families.  The Office of Financial Aid is here to aid in the process. There is no guarantee that the OFA will be able to award enough funds to cover the entire cost of attendance.  Try our Net Price Calculator for an estimate on what it may cost to attend FVSU.
• Scholarships are ALWAYS the best option. Scholarships minimize the amount the student would have to pay back after graduation. Students can attend FVSU without borrowing students loans, IF they do the work and apply for as many scholarships as possible.  Check our Scholarship page for internal and external scholarships.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Fort Valley State University is covered by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974. FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Under this Act, students have the right to:

1. inspect and review education records maintained by the institution that pertain to them,
2. challenge the content of records on the grounds that they are inaccurate, misleading or a violation of their privacy or other rights, and
3. control disclosures from their education records with certain exceptions

Confidentiality

The Office of Financial Aid will not disclose financial information or award amounts in emails to anyone, including the student. Students may access their specific financial aid information by logging into their MyFVSU account.
