The Natural and Computational Sciences Department administers the the following academic programming within the College of Arts and Sciences.

The department also offers courses in Mathematics Education, Physics, Engineering Technology, Nuclear Science and Bioinformatics, and has a plan to establish  minor, concentration, certificate, associate or BS degree programs in these areas. Additionally, students enrolled in our programs may choose to minor in programs offered by other departments of FVSU.

The department also participates in several 3+2 dual degree programs, in conjunction with FVSU’s Cooperative Development Energy Program (CDEP).

 

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics curriculum provides students the educational background and competencies necessary for effective performance in mathematics-related fields and for entrance into graduate schools.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science curriculum involves the study of the logical organization, design, and functions of computers with emphasis on scientific and technical applications. The program provides majors with a firm foundation for graduate study, as well as the necessary skills for viable, entry-level employment upon graduation.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems curriculum involves the study of computer applications in the areas of commerce, business, government, and industry with emphases on understanding systems operations and data processing applications and procedures. The program provides majors with a firm foundation for graduate study, as well as the necessary skills for viable, entry-level employment upon graduation.

Through CDEP dual degree program, students obtain a B.S. degree in Mathematics from FVSU and a second  B.S. degree in engineering, geosciences or health physics, from Georgia Tech (GT), the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), Penn State University (PSU), the University of Texas-Austin (UT-Austin), the University of Texas Pan American (UTPA), and the University of Arkansas (UARK).

The faculty members are strongly committed to providing quality undergraduate education.

The department also offers numerous core and service courses designed to improve and strengthen students’ quantitative literacy, analytical thinking, critical thinking and reasoning strategies, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills. In addition, the department helps students to participate in several internship opportunities, job fair and training opportunities and Research Experience for Undergraduates Programs (REUs), in collaboration with several industries, research institutions and organizations.

The Department of  Natural and Computational Sciences is a part of the College of Arts and Sciences, which has the largest enrollment on the FVSU campus.

The Department constantly seeks to provide students with state-of-the-art computing facilities and learning environments in which students are challenged to think creatively and critically and to achieve excellence in their fields of study.  In addition to its teaching commitment, the Department is determined to support the competitive research and development of the faculty, students, and staff; to enhance and promote scholarly activities; and, to build a solid foundation for establishing graduate programs in the foreseeable future.

The department remains committed to providing the support and the resources needed to ensure that its students will mature into successful practitioners in careers of service and fruitful research. Our highly qualified faculty is a critical link in our efforts to motivate and train our students.
