Fort Valley State University’s Response to COVID-19

Update 3-26-20

Fort Valley State University is actively monitoring the outbreak of COVID-19.  The following information is provided in an effort to keep our University community informed of the status of the COVID-19 pandemic as it impacts our community members.

As of March 16, 2020, the University began operating in an online environment and with reduced operations campus-wide. Effective March 30, 2020, and continuing through the end of this academic year, all classroom instruction will be conducted virtually.  Residence Halls are officially closed.

On March 25, 2020, Fort Valley State University has been notified of a situation related to COVID-19, where there is a confirmed case.  Out of an abundance of caution, we wanted to make you aware of the following:

We were notified that a person who works in the College of Agriculture has tested positive for COVID-19.  The notification came from a colleague who alerted the manager who in turn notified FVSU.  The individual had not been on campus for the past two weeks.

The CDC says that individuals exposed to asymptomatic people with potential exposure (such as from a family member who has tested positive) are not considered exposed.  They do not recommend testing, symptom monitoring or special management for the individuals.  However, if you develop symptoms (fever, cough, and shortness of breath), call your health care provider for guidance.

Health officials are taking precautionary measures to quickly identify cases of COVID-19 and take appropriate public health action to reduce its spread and protect the general public in identifying potential contacts.  For members of the Fort Valley State University community, the best prevention measures for any respiratory virus, including COVID-19 are:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.  If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

While we understand the concerns and fear around the COVID-19, it is extremely important to stay calm and maintain a close eye on your health and any symptoms that may arise.  The symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

In addition, if you have recently traveled to areas where there are ongoing outbreaks of COVID-19 and develop a fever with cough and shortness of breath within 14 days of your travel, or if you have had contact with someone who is suspected to have COVID-19, stay home and call your health care provider or local health department right away.  Be sure to call before going to a doctor’s office, emergency room, or urgent care center and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.

We will continue to provide updates as we learn more.
