Diner En Bleu is an evening of sophistication hosted by Fort Valley State University. This event is dedicated to celebrating and spotlighting the remarkable talents within the FVSU community, all while contributing to the advancement of student engagement and success through a meaningful fundraiser, raising funds to support students beyond the classroom.

Attire
All guests are asked to wear elegant, sophisticated royal blue attire accented with black, with royal blue predominating. This is always planned to be an outdoor event; however, adjustments will be made according to the weather.

FACULTY
Aftab Siddique
I am writing to enthusiastically nominate Dr. Aftab Siddique for the Rising Star Award at Fort Valley State University. His outstanding contributions to food science, poultry processing, and agricultural data analytics are pushing boundaries of innovation in these areas. Dr. Siddique’s research journey began here at Fort Valley State University as a master’s student. His research focused on dairy product innovation, food safety, and precision agriculture. His work has since expanded to AI-driven animal health monitoring, machine learning applications in poultry processing, and geospatial modeling for sustainable livestock production. Dr. Siddique’s 2023–2024 research included developing AI models for rapid anemia detection in small ruminants, predictive classification models for poultry meat quality, and GIS-based decision support systems for precision agriculture. He has secured multiple USDA-NIFA and Oracle for Research grants, contributed to high-impact journal publications, and received the Distinguished Dissertation Award at Auburn University in 2023. Additionally, his impressive history in research and expertise in big data analytics and AI in agriculture has earned him a guest speaker role at the 2025 International Graduate Research Conference, where he will share his knowledge with a global audience. Dr. Siddique’s dedication, innovative approach, research excellence, and contributions to agricultural sustainability make him an outstanding candidate for the Rising Star Award.
Nancy Forde'
Dr. Nancy Forde is the epitome of the Rising Star Fort Valley Award, bringing over 35 years of educational experience and a steadfast commitment to student success. Her dedication to both undergraduate and graduate students is evident through her efforts to advance education and foster positive contributions to the community. Recently, Dr. Forde proposed an innovative action plan focused on student retention and building strategic partnerships with school districts and the broader community, reinforcing her visionary leadership. All of her work aligns with her mission to create meaningful spaces for ongoing, profound dialogue that benefits students and the community alike. As a nationally recognized leader, Dr. Forde's impact is undeniable, making her a deserving recipient of this honor.
Sanower Warsi
Since joining FVSU and the Mbata's Research Team in January 2024, she has shown unwavering dedication to driving meaningful change in the field of entomology. Her hard work and commitment are evident in her relentless pursuit of advancing both scientific research and the academic goals of the entomology laboratory and coursework. Her passion for her work is inspiring, and she is always eager to uplift students, colleagues, and junior team members, guiding them toward success and greatness. Recognizing her as the next Rising Star would not only honor her exceptional contributions but also fuel her motivation to continue making a profound impact.

Aaliyah Wilkerson
I am honored to nominate Aaliyah Wilkerson for the Rising Star Award in recognition of her remarkable contributions to FVSU. Since joining the Office of Recruitment and Admissions in October 2022, Aaliyah has demonstrated exceptional creativity, leadership, and Wildcat pride, making a lasting impact on student recruitment and engagement.
Aaliyah was the brainchild behind the Ignite Your Light campaign, an initiative originally developed for Admissions that has been so successful it has been adopted by multiple departments across campus for various campaigns and events. Her innovative marketing strategies and recruitment efforts have played a crucial role in FVSU’s record-breaking enrollment, helping to attract and engage future Wildcats in meaningful ways.
Beyond her work in recruitment, Aaliyah is a dedicated ambassador for FVSU, always proudly sporting blue and gold. She actively shares her knowledge and passion with others, recently presenting on leadership at Miss FVSU’s Wildcat Women Connect series. She has also served as a presenter at professional conferences, sharing valuable insights on marketing and recruitment strategies.
Her influence extends far beyond her official duties. Aaliyah is known for her mentorship, guidance, and ability to inspire students and colleagues. She approaches every challenge with enthusiasm and resilience, making a difference in the lives of those around her. With her recent acceptance into Kennesaw State University’s PhD in Marketing program, she continues to push the boundaries of excellence, reinforcing her commitment to lifelong learning and leadership.

Britney Smith
I am excited to nominate Britney Smith for the Rising Star Award. Since joining Fort Valley State University, Britney has demonstrated exceptional promise, initiative, and achievement in her role as Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, significantly contributing to the advancement and positive reputation of FVSU.
Under her leadership, the marketing and communications department has accomplished so much. To name a few, Britney successfully launched a new website and initiated weekly communications to keep faculty, staff, students, and alumni informed and engaged. Our social media presence has grown significantly, and our marketing and branding efforts have improved drastically, all while the department continues to support each division of the University. Accomplishments of Marketing and Communications reflect her commitment to excellence and her ability to lead with vision and strategy.
Britney implemented the Media and Marketing Agency, leveraging student talent that has elevated FVSU’s visibility, and she continuously inspires her team to think big and push boundaries. Her ability to encourage innovation and foster a collaborative work environment has positioned the department for continued success.
She is an amazing boss—compassionate, resourceful, and brilliant—always offering guidance, support, and encouragement. Britney creates an environment where everyone (staff, interns and students) feels empowered to achieve their best, and she inspires us all to reach for greater heights.
Britney Smith the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at Fort Valley State University, is the epitome of a Rising Star. Despite leading a small three-person team composed primarily of student interns, she consistently delivers excellence, innovation, and unwavering dedication to FVSU’s mission. Her leadership potential is evident in her ability to mentor students, execute high-impact initiatives, and exceed expectations—even taking on responsibilities beyond her role. Her commitment to professional development and community engagement inspires those around her, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence. With her tireless work ethic and positive influence, she is shaping the future of FVSU’s brand and deserves this prestigious honor.

Edwidge Dufresne
I enthusiastically nominate Edwidge Dufresne for the "Rising Star" category. In his role as the Director of Facilities, Edwidge has demonstrated outstanding performance and unwavering commitment, making a significant impact at Fort Valley State University since his arrival in 2019.
Edwidge's contributions are significant as he has successfully led and completed several major projects on campus, showcasing his leadership skills and dedication. These projects include the track resurfacing and artificial turf on the football field, Fambro’s renovation, the new amphitheater, and Bond Basement renovation. His exceptional performance and achievements are particularly commendable given the resources available to our institution. Edwidge has not only met but exceeded expectations in his role, constantly driving the university towards excellence.
Edwidge's leadership continues to shine as he oversees several major and notable projects currently underway on campus including the renovation of Davison, Bywaters, Lyons, the new residential facility, and central energy plant. His ability to manage and execute complex tasks with limited resources is a testament to his skill, resilience, and innovative thinking. He has become an invaluable asset to our university, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the wider university community.

Karin Vinson
I am nominating Ms. Karin Vinson for the Rising Star award because she is the epitome of promise, initiative, and achievement here at FVSU. She has shown exemplary leadership in becoming the General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs as she successfully transitioned from her role as Compliance Coordinator. She has already had an enormous impact on the legal department. She goes the extra mile to make sure others in her department have the tools to grow professionally and truly cares about their success as well.
While serving as General Counsel, she also serves as advisor to the Blue Coat Ambassadors. I have had the opportunity to see first-hand her positive impact on the Blue Coats. She takes the time to personally get to know all the Blue Coats and enjoys the community engagement her role with the Blue Coats allows her to have. Anyone who knows Ms. Vinson knows that she sincerely loves all things FVSU! As a graduate she embodies the true wildcat spirit and tries to instill that same spirit into the Blue Coats every chance she gets.
Phaneendra Batchu
Phannendra Batchu is a dynamic and dedicated professional who embodies the essence of a Rising Star through his exceptional contributions to the college community. With a strong commitment to academic excellence and student success, he has demonstrated remarkable leadership, innovation, and dedication in his role.
In a short span of time, Phannendra has made a significant impact by introducing new initiatives, streamlining processes, and fostering a supportive learning environment. His proactive approach and problem-solving mindset have not only improved operational efficiency but also enhanced the overall experience for students, faculty, and staff.
Recognized for his passion for education and institutional growth, Phannendra consistently goes beyond expectations to support both students and colleagues. His ability to lead with integrity, enthusiasm, and a forward-thinking vision positions him as a key contributor to the college’s continued success.

Samantha Hutchinson
It is with great enthusiasm that I nominate Samantha Hutchinson for the “Rising Star” award. As a 2005 graduate of Fort Valley State University, she returned in August 2019 as the Director of Accounting in the Business and Finance Division. Sam is an exceptional performer and has shown an unwavering commitment and dedication to “raising the bar” towards excellence. Her leadership and contributions in the division have made a significant impact on not only the division but the university as a whole.
In January 2025, Sam was one of 10 participants who graduated as part of the first cohort of the University System of Georgia, Chief Business Officer Flywheel Accelerated Development Program. The program aims to cultivate system-wide talent of individuals interested in learning more about the CBO role.
Sam's exceptional performance and dedication have greatly benefitted the university. Her leadership and commitment to excellence are evident in the significant improvements in our financial performance and growth. She has become an invaluable asset to our institution, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues.

Dr. Fields runs the Political Science Student Association, Wildcat Learning Community, and Valley Girls. She works hard to make sure students feel supported and have chances to grow. She has kept the Political Science Department strong and has helped many students in the program.She always goes the extra mile to guide and inspire her students. She helps them build skills, gain confidence, and prepare for their future. Her passion for education and leadership makes a big difference in students’ lives. Dr. Fields deserves to be recognized for her hard work and dedication.
Jacques Surrency
Dr.Surrency is the very heart and soul of Fort Valley State University. His dedication, hard work, and unwavering support have shaped the lives of countless students, always keeping the university’s mission at the forefront. But his connection to FVSU runs even deeper—he was born here, raised on this campus, watching his parents pursue their dreams within these very halls. This place isn’t just where he learned; it’s where he grew, where he found his purpose, and where he chose to give back.
For 20 years, he has been more than an educator—he has been a mentor, a guiding light, and a constant source of encouragement. He takes every extra step, goes beyond what’s expected, and ensures that every student feels seen, heard, and valued. His approachability, open-mindedness, and selfless dedication make him a pillar of this institution, a true embodiment of what it means to be a Wildcat.
FVSU is not just where he works—it’s part of who he is. His legacy, his service, and his passion have left an undeniable mark on this university and on everyone lucky enough to cross his path. There is no one more deserving of this award than Dr.Surrency—his heart beats for Fort Valley State, and we are all better because of him.

Brian Byrd
I met Mr. Byrd during my initial virtual interview with the Search Committee for the Executive Assistant for the VP of SAEM. As the team introduced themselves, Mr. Byrd stood out as he introduced himself as the Director of Campus Life. While I truly did not grasp the extent of his role at FVSU when I first met him, I have a new-found understanding and respect for Mr. Byrd and all that he does here @ FVSU.
“Campus Life” is Brian Byrd and Brian Byrd is Campus Life. Mr. Byrd oversees all aspects of campus life @ FVSU: from chairing the FVSU Homecoming Committee, Advising the Student Government Association, Student Conduct Coordinator, Greek Life, managing the logistics of Fall/Spring Move-In, Enrollment 101, New Student Orientation. Mr. Byrd is the Technology “guru” for the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, serves of many university committees, and can occasionally be seen driving an FVSU shuttle or van during FVSU Signature events.
Mr. Byrd truly embodies the “Heart of the Valley” Award. He possesses a wealth of knowledge about all things FVSU. He is committed to FVSU scholars and works tirelessly to support students, faculty, and staff alike. While he moves quietly, his work ethic speaks loudly and for itself. Mr. Byrd also possesses a “let’s make it happen” and “can-do” wildcat spirit that is commendable. He is esteemed by his colleagues and respected by the students.

Columbus Alderman
I am nominating Mr. Alderman because he is the one person that so many people can depend on. It doesn't matter if you know him or not, he will always have a yes available. Mr. Alderman is a hard-working individual, he is a family man and rarely meets a stranger. I see this as an honor to nominate such an awesome person.
Danyell Barry
Danyell Barry embodies the true essence of FVSU through her commitment, leadership and service. As an FVSU alumna and dedicated staff member for more than 20 years, she has played an integral role in the university’s continued success, ensuring that students, faculty, and staff have the resources needed to thrive.
Since 2004, Barry has served in various capacities, steadily rising through the ranks due to her exceptional work ethic and dedication to institutional advancement. In her current role as Title III Director, she oversees and manages critical Title III and SAFRA grant funds, ensuring compliance and strategic allocation of resources that directly enhance student learning, faculty development, and university infrastructure. Under her leadership, numerous projects and programs are funded annually through Title III, impacting every facet of FVSU’s academic and operational success. She is widely known as the go-to person for all things Title III, expertly handling everything and everyone with professionalism, care, and efficiency.
Though she may come off as quiet, those who know Barry understand that she has a very witty and humorous personality. She is even known for delivering the funniest joke at FVSU’s leadership retreat, proving that while her work is serious, she never misses an opportunity to bring laughter and joy to those around her.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Barry is a champion for higher education and leadership development. A 2017 graduate of the Leadership Institute of Columbus State University, she has earned a B.B.A. in Business Administration from FVSU (magna cum laude), an M.B.A. from Albany State University, and an M.S. in Human Resource Management from Troy University.
Barry is a true embodiment of the Heart of the Valley Award. Her contributions to FVSU’s success and her ability to uplift those around her make her a deserving recipient of this honor.
Debra Johnson
Mrs. Johnson exudes wildcat support. She is often in wildcat attire, supports our students thru admin support and supports the Dept. Of VS and PH thru her neverending dedication to "helping" others. She is truly the Mamma Wildcat of our Program.
Jartavious Henton
Mr. Henton is the epitome of hard work and determination. He started his journey of wanting to be a wildcat listening to the band from his apartment complex near the campus. His intellectual delays put a hinderance to his goals he thought but with encouragement and the will to succeed he started his journey of being a wildcat and later becoming an alumnus. I believe this is what the heart of "the Valley" is someone who works hard, represents the city and the university and is proud to be a wildcat through and through.
Jocelyn Powell
Dr. Powell has shown the greatest amount of wildcat pride by not only once attending but by also giving back to the same wildcat community as a staff member for over 20 years. She inspires me to show my school pride by demonstrating the true definition of being a proud wildcat .
Dr. Powell is the definition of a pure blood wildcat. Her dedication and school spirit is obvious to anyone who has met her. She helps students, staff and faculty in various ways!
Octavius Edwards

Valeria Bass
Ms. Bass worked over 35 years in our beloved university and earned two masters' from our university. Over the years she has served several 100s of students, dozens of faculty, and administrators. She has been consistently phenomenal in her communications, efficiency, care for others, organizing events, supporting administrators, etc. along with her unpackable punctuality, reliability, knowledge in what she does. She bears an exemplary character. Simply said, she is the heart of FVSU and deserve to be the 'heart of the Valley.'
Amanda Glover
Dr. Glover is the heart of the Online Learning Department. She goes above and beyond making sure faculty are able to navigate that space. She is always willing to help when called upon.
Unwavering support and dedication to Fort Valley State University, its students, colleagues and the Fort Valley community.
After working with Dr. Glover for the past 6 years, I am convinced there is no one on campus who is as dedicated and conscientious. Dr. Glover works with each faculty, staff, or student who seeks assistance however long needed to help them solve their problem or answer their question. She puts in after-hours work on both the weekdays and weekends because she feels it is important. She does everything out of a heart of care and concern for all those supporting and experiencing what Fort Valley State University has to offer.

I am pleased to nominate Atty. Gracy Barksdale for the 2025 Heartbeat in the Valley award, what she does and for who she is. She is Wildcat Love!
She is an Alumni of over 40 years who embodies the essence of this award—her enduring service can be felt across the campus today, her dedication to the University is verifiable and her impact is evident in the lives she has and consistently touch.
Moreover, she has consistently lived out the pillars of Fort Valley State University-while being loyal, true and faithful to her beloved Alma Mater.
She has upheld the University’s mission, by supporting students; old and new, which has been exhibited generation after generation. Promoting the life and legacy of Fort Valley State is an obligation she approaches with pride.
Her deep commitment to service, student success, and institutional growth extends beyond Fort Valley, Georgia. Her lasting contributions to FVSU’s advancement through leadership, mentorship, or philanthropy all have traveled to her city of Atlanta and in the lives of students she helped throughout the United States and beyond. Emma Best
It is with great enthusiasm that I nominate Dr. Emma Best for the "Heart of the Valley" award. As a 1967 graduate of Fort Valley State College with a BS in Health and Physical Education, Dr. Best exemplifies the spirit of our university and truly bleeds blue and gold.
Throughout her exceptional career in teaching and athletics, Dr. Best has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the university, student success, and institutional growth. Although she left Georgia shortly after graduating from FVSU, she has always maintained a strong connection and passion for her alma mater, regularly visiting during university events and contributing generously through philanthropy.
In late 2022, Dr. Best returned to the Valley to assist the athletics department as an operations consultant. Her dedication continues to shine as she volunteers her time to ensure compliance and operational excellence within the department. Furthermore, Dr. Best serves on the board of the Athletic Association, continuously contributing her expertise and insights to the benefit of the university.
Dr. Best's unwavering commitment and selfless contributions to Fort Valley State University exemplify the qualities of the "Heart of the Valley." Her impact on our community, both past and present, makes her an outstanding candidate for this prestigious award.
Sallie Mills
Dr. Mills is an active member of our Newton, Rockdale & Walton Alumni chapter. She is an active participant in our local unit as well as our scholarship committee. She help with recruiting students for Fort Valley State. She is an active member of our community.

Jean Dickerson Spence has been representing the Dickerson Family and 4 generations since 1959.
