The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recently appointed Dr. Seyedmehdi Mobini, a Fort Valley State University professor of veterinary science, to a new leadership role to help ensure a quality educational experience for veterinary students across the nation.

Mobini will serve as an at-large member of the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA). His duty is to offer support and carry out the functions of the organization. “I can bring some insight to FVSU from my learning experiences about what other programs are doing to be successful,” Mobini said.

Nominated by the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA), the CVTEA member said to receive this appointment is an honor. “It’s fulfilling to know that I can contribute overall to not only educating veterinary technicians in Fort Valley, but now on a national level. It is also in recognition of the expertise of faculty and the resources at Fort Valley State University. We have one of the best veterinary technology programs,” Mobini said.

The AVMA CVTEA is the national accreditation body for the 204 veterinary technology programs in the United States and Canada. FVSU, which currently enrolls 150 veterinary technology students, offers the only four-year veterinary technology program in Georgia.

With 41 years of experience in veterinary education, the Auburn University alumnus gained experience by teaching at his alma mater and Tuskegee University prior to teaching at FVSU. He also helped revitalize FVSU’s O’Neal Veterinary Building with new equipment and assisted in starting a program at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) University.

It isn’t just about teaching. It’s all about helping students and continuing the profession

A 2015 FVSU Service Excellence Award recipient, Mobini said he has a desire to serve. “It really energizes me when I serve on these committees and in different service capacities. That’s one of the areas I enjoy,” he said. “Service is something that I want to continue in my profession.”

In addition to serving on the AVMA CVTEA, Mobini is a member of the Executive Board and Board of Directors of the GVMA and the AVMA House of Delegates. He previously served on the AVMA Legislative Advisory Committee and the AVMA Animal Welfare Committee for six years.

By serving on various committees, Mobini said it offers him the opportunity to learn and share that knowledge with colleagues and students. “Some of the knowledge I gain, I always bring it back to the classroom to help students. Many of these students need guidance. Education itself is not enough,” he said.

The AVMA CVTEA consists of 20 members. The committee’s objective is to recognize veterinary technician training programs that are fully capable of graduating acceptable assistants for veterinarians and to assist in the development of such programs. Mobini’s appointment to the AVMA CVTEA officially starts July 1, 2018, and ends Aug. 1, 2024.
