Fort Valley State’s men’s and women’s tennis programs are under the watchful eye of head coach Willie Foster.
Foster, a native of Athens, Ga., was a multi-sport letter winner at Clarke Central High School. After graduating from Clarke Central, Foster matriculated at Fort Valley State University (FVSU) where he lettered in tennis under then head tennis coach Dr. Curtis Martin.
Upon graduating from FVSU, Foster served as an assistant coach under Martin. One year after Martin stepped down, Foster was named as the head coach. Since then, the FVSU tennis programs have contended for honors in the SIAC and NCAA.
In 2001, the women’s tennis team won the SIAC title and in 2003, the men claimed its first championship. The men’s team has also qualified for the NCAA Tennis Championships twice.
In addition to excellence on the court, the tennis teams have also done well in the classroom, winning the prestigious “Team with the Highest GPA” award numerous times.
A familiar face around the Fort Valley area, Foster has been very active in the community with numerous groups and organizations.
