STATEMENT BY FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY ON THE FARM BILL CONFERENCE COMMITTEE REPORT

Dr. Paul Jones, Fort Valley State University President, and GA State Representative Calvin Smyre, Chairman of the Fort Valley State University Foundation Board of Trustees, today issued the following statement regarding the Farm Bill Conference Committee Report:

"On behalf of Fort Valley State University (FVSU), we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Georgia Congressional Delegation, members of the Bipartisan Congressional Historically Black Colleges and Universities Caucus and members of the Agriculture Committee for their work in the crafting the Farm Bill and subsequent conference committee report. The bill will open the doors of opportunity in the agriculture industry for numerous students who otherwise might not have access to the education needed to become positive contributors to the field. The Carryover Equity Act provisions, which will allow land grant universities to carry over unused grant funds from year to year, will ensure that FVSU can more efficiently manage critically important grants and more effectively utilize funds for their intended purpose. Just as important, the new scholarship programs for students attending historically black land-grant institutions who want to pursue a career in agriculture will lead to increased diversity in the field and help direct the talents of more students along a career path of vital importance to our nation's economy and the sustainability of our planet.

"The university would like to thank all of the Members of Congress responsible for their hard work in the crafting and adoption of key components of the bill. The university would particularly like to thank members of the Georgia delegation including U.S. Senators David Perdue and Johnny Isakson, and U.S. Representatives Austin Scott, Sanford Bishop and David Scott for their important work."
