Graduating Senior Adelia McKinley Is What Achievement Looks Like

If you are looking for a model of achievement at FVSU, it's hard to look past graduating senior Adelia McKinley. The agricultural economics major is a scholar, active in campus leadership, and has racked up award after award on a national scale. She was an HBCU Competitiveness Scholar, part of a White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities initiative. She was also FVSU's Thurgood Marshall College Fund's student ambassador, helping to alert fellow students to professional development and career opportunities. She has served as a class vice president, as executive secretary of the Student Government Association, and a student senator. She was president of the Agricultural Economics Club, vice president of the FVSU chapter of Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS), secretary of the National Council of Negro Women, and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She's interned with Land O'Lakes, helping the agribusiness giant generate thousands of dollars in revenue and cost savings.

"Ask questions," she said. "Don't be comfortable, ever. Don't be okay with the bare minimum. Do more than what they ask for. Do more than your counterparts. Go above and beyond. It helps you to find out more about yourself in terms of personal growth and professional growth."

McKinley has won scholarships from the National Black Farmers Association, USDA, the FVSU Foundation, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and the Tom Joyner Foundation. She also won a the Justin Smith Morrill Scholarship from the 1890 Universities Foundation. Recently, she won the third place award for presenting her research on the demand for goat meat in the Southern United States at the Association of 1890 Research Directors (ARD) 19th Biennial Research Symposium.

She believes that you reap what you sow, and has worked hard to sow excellence. Her grade point average is one of the highest in the graduating class, and she's accepted a full-time job with Land O' Lakes. She looks forward to earning her MBA and becoming an entrepreneur.
