Students offer free professional headshots to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of Breast Awareness Month, a group of Fort Valley State University students collaborated to bring breast cancer awareness to campus while helping students become more marketable.
FVSU senior and published photographer Colby Hicks organized fellow photographers and campus organizations to host Pink With A Purpose Wildcat Mingle on Oct. 30, 2017, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. in FVSU's Student Amenities Center banquet room. Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend a free photo shoot and balloon release ceremony.
This month is special to Hicks, who is also a former substitute teacher. "I support breast cancer awareness month because I know individuals who have been affected by cancer. A mom to one of my students died of breast cancer. Professionally and personally, that was a very difficult time." Hicks continued, "It's important that I use my craft, photography, to bring awareness to such a noble cause. In doing so I'm also helping others."
According to Hicks, everyone will need professional images whether now in college or for future careers.
"You only get one chance to make a first impression. When it comes to individuals' online presence, employers are relying heavily on profile photos for this impression. Professional photos help define who you are and how you want to be perceived by others," said Hicks.
Participants will receive one free high resolution headshot and full body photo taken by student photographers. All students and staff with FVSU identification are welcome to visit the booth. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness month.
