Choosing to major in Business Management was an easy decision for Kelvin Melzar Jr. Known to most Wildcats as "Melzar," he is a passionate entrepreneur from Columbus, Georgia. Melzar reflects on his time at Fort Valley State University (FVSU) with gratitude and pride. "I wanted to learn how to run my company better," he shared, crediting FVSU with equipping him with the tools to navigate the complexities of business ownership.

Melzar's business, Melzar Productions, has been a driving force in his journey. Focused on photography and videography, the company grew alongside his education, shaped by the lessons and experiences he gained at FVSU. "I've always been passionate about capturing moments, and my classes helped me turn that passion into a sustainable business," he said.

In fact, if you attended FVSU between 2020 and 2024, there's a good chance Melzar captured one of your favorite college memories. He became a trusted name in campus photography and videography through his work with the university's Office of Marketing and Communications and his independent projects. Over his college career, Melzar covered and photographed eight FVSU commencement ceremonies, documenting the joy and triumph of graduating Wildcats. This year, however, the tables have turned. Instead of being behind the lens, Melzar will be the one walking across the stage and having his moment captured.

Among the highlights of his academic journey were classes with Sarwan Dhir, Ph.D., a professor known for his humor and engaging teaching style. "He had this way of making even the most difficult concepts fun and memorable," Melzar said. Beyond the classroom, traveling with Dhir to the Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM offered insights into the professional world and valuable networking opportunities.

Like many students, Melzar faced challenges, particularly financial pressures and the balancing act of managing time. "I relied on calendars and time schedules and always made sure to set aside time for my mental health," he explained. Scholarships and work-study programs were crucial in helping him stay on track and complete his degree.

Melzar's involvement in extracurricular activities also played a pivotal role in shaping his college experience. From serving in the Student Government Association to being a team lead for the Media and Marketing Agency (MMA), a student team deployed by FVSU’s Office of Marketing and Communications. One of his favorite memories was working football games with MMA. "I loved being able to represent my school this way," he said. As a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. through the Gamma Zeta chapter, he developed leadership skills, honed his communication abilities, and learned the power of teamwork. "These experiences taught me the betterment of a man," he shared.

As graduation approaches, Melzar has big plans: applying for university staff positions and expanding Melzar Productions into the world of sports media. His dream of becoming a professional photographer and videographer has been fueled by his work with the FVSU Office of Marketing and Communications, where he gained invaluable experience creating visual stories and capturing campus life.

When asked about his legacy, Melzar spoke about the MMA team. "I hope MMA continues to thrive and grow. I put so much time and effort into it, and I'd love to see it continue to succeed."

Reflecting on his journey, Melzar credits DJ Pearson, FVSU photographer, as a pivotal mentor. "DJ took me under his wing, teaching me not just how to grow my business but how to grow as a person. For that, I'm forever grateful," he said.

Summing up his college experience in three words—fast, exciting, and memorable—Melzar advises incoming students: "Get out and explore. Make friends and connections. Don't be stuck in your room."

As he steps into the next chapter, the skills, relationships, and memories he's built at FVSU will continue to guide him. With his sights set on his professional goals, Kelvin Melzar Jr. is ready to make his mark on the world while inspiring others to chase their dreams.
